When is Iressa 250 mg Tablet prescribed ?

Iressa Tablet is used for treatment of metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma are all subtypes of NSCLC. It usually grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer

How Does Iressa (Gefitinib) 250 mg Tablet Work ?

Gefitinib is a type of biological therapy called a protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). Tyrosine kinase is a protein which acts as a chemical messenger (an enzyme). There are a number of different tyrosine kinases that encourage cancer cells to grow.

Iressa (Gefitinib) works by preventing lung cancer cells from growing and multiplying. Many cells, including cancer cells, have receptors on their surfaces for epidermal growth factor (EGF), a protein that is normally produced by the body and that promotes the growth and multiplication of cells. When EGF attaches to epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs), it causes an enzyme called tyrosine kinase to become active within the cells. Tyrosine kinase triggers chemical processes that cause the cells, including cancer cells, to grow, multiply, and spread. Gefitinib attaches to EGFRs and thereby blocks the attachment of EGF and the activation of tyrosine kinase.
